Super Bowl XXXII Spreadsheet/Charting Activity
January 25, 1998, San Diego CA

The Green Bay Packers are heading to the Super Bowl for the second year in a row!

Go Pack Go!

This year the Packers will face the Denver Broncos led by John Elway. Is it possible to study game statistics and predict the winner?

In this activity you will use the new skills you have learned while studying the ClarisWorks spreadsheet and its charting (graphing) features. Design and build a spreadsheet using the data on this page. Then chart important pieces of spreadsheet data to prove that the Packers (or possibly the Broncos) will win Super Bowl XXXII. See the bottom of this page for a sample.

During the regular season the Packers and Broncos played against four common opponents. Note that both teams were 4-0 against these teams.

--- Common Opponent ---

Packers W/L (Score)

New England Patriots

October 27 - W (28-10)

October 6 - W (34-13)

December 14 - W (31-10)

November 9 - W (34-0)

Buffalo Bills

December 20 - W (31-21)

October 26 - W (23-20)

Let's look at some important quarterback statistics from these games. From this information you could graph various types of data. You could also calculate the passing percentage or each quarterback (passing percentage=attempts/completions). Scroll to the bottom of this page for a sample chart.

A sample graph which compares some of this information is shown below. Note that the data listed in the tables above need to be rearranged so that the chart makes sense. Hint: the range of numbers for the chart listed below is A1..C5

Now, you choose the data, design and build a spreadsheet, and graph the information to visually see the data. Once you have produced a chart, print it out and write a short paragraph explaining your personal analysis of the data. Be sure to include who has the advantage based on the data you selected.
