Advancement Via Individual Determination

The Mequon-Thiensville School District is the only public school district in the state of Wisconsin to offer Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) to all students in grades K-12. AVID is a College Readiness System designed to accelerate student learning and prepare all students for college readiness and success through the use of research-based instructional methodologies. AVID aims to equip students with intellectual skills and behaviors for academic success in rigorous coursework. AVID empowers students with strategies necessary to navigate the educational landscape through an explicit focus on high expectations. AVID’s College Readiness System is comprised of three primary components: AVID Elementary, AVID Schoolwide, and the AVID Elective course.

Organizational Binder

Research shows that providing students with strategies and tools to enhance their time management, communication, organization and study skills, and provide them with ownership of their learning is critical to academic success. To ensure that all of our students have the opportunity to practice these important strategies and develop these skills, we use a district-wide, consistent organizational binder for students in grades 4 through 8. (Oriole Lane students begin using the organizational system in grade 3.) The binder includes a high?quality Case-It binder, durable, color-coded plastic dividers and reinforced loose-leaf paper. Students and teachers use the binder as a means to develop organizational skills and strategies for student success.
