Hilary James, Sherry Hovey and Monica Treptow - Outstanding Educators of the Year 2016-17
The Mequon-Thiensville School District is pleased to announce that three teachers have been recognized for their contributions to students and their school communities. Sherry Hovey, Hilary James and Monica Treptow have been named Outstanding Educators of the Year for the 2016-17 school year.
The award recipients were nominated by their colleagues for their passion, professionalism and dedication to excellence in education. Once nominated, staff members are asked to complete a robust application process. A selection committee reviews the applications and votes on award distribution at the district level.
Sherry Hovey is a speech and language pathologist, primarily serving the district’s youngest learners with speech therapy needs, including some students who are non-verbal. Her colleagues say, “Sherry’s ability to assess the needs of students is exemplary. Non-verbal students are pulled out of their silent worlds by Sherry using all kinds of assistive technologies, music and manipulatives. To see Sherry work is to see magic happen.”
Hilary James is a 4-year-old kindergarten teacher at Wilson Elementary School, and she additionally serves as the 4K department chair. Those who supported James’ nomination explain that “her ability to seamlessly combine academics with positive social interactions that are both structured and joyful is magical to witness.”
Monica Treptow, research and digital learning specialist at Wilson Elementary School, was supported in her nomination by colleagues and a parent who explained that “she has inspired students, parents and co-workers with her intelligence, enthusiasm, professionalism and creativity.”
“What is remarkable is that those who supported the nominations of these three educators all commented on their ability to build a relationship with each child,” said Executive Director of Human Capital Sarah Zelazoski. “The passion and skill that these educators have demonstrated in personalizing student learning is admirable.”
Hovey, James and Treptow will be formally recognized at MTSD’s Staff Recognition Celebration in May 2017.
