NWEA MAP Assessment
MAP Growth tests are administered to all MTSD students in grades 1-8 in the fall, winter, and spring. These tests not only determine students' instructional level, but also measure their academic growth throughout the school year (and from year to year) in reading and mathematics.
These tests are unique in that they are adaptive tests taken on a computer or tablet, which means that the tests become more difficult when a student answers a question correctly. If a student answers a question incorrectly, the test becomes easier. Ultimately, this means that students take tests specifically targeting their learning level and in alignment with Mequon-Thiensville School District standards.

Below, progress for the two milestones is represented for MTSD students that were administered both the Winter 2020 NWEA MAP reading and mathematics assessment and the Winter 2021 NWEA MAP reading and mathematics assessment by cohort. Note that all MTSD students enrolled in on campus learning and half of the students enrolled in distance learning participated in the assessment.
Of the seven grade levels with two year’s worth of data to inform the report, four (Grade 2, 3, 4, and 7) increased the percentage of students, one (Grade 6) was essentially static, and two (Grade 5 and 7) saw a decrease in the percentage of students achieving Milestone 2.
In mathematics, four of our grade levels (Grade 3, 5, 7, and 8) increased the percentage of students, one (Grade 4) was essentially static, and three grade levels (Grade 2, 4, and 6) saw a decrease in the percentage of students achieving Milestone 3.
As a school district, while we continue to strive toward all of our students reaching the Milestones, it is good to note that student achievement as measured in the NWEA MAP interim assessments this winter has remained strong in the MTSD despite the pandemic.
