Wellness Committee

Our health and wellness committee is an advisory group comprised of staff, administrators, students, parents and community specialists. The committee is guided by board policy 8510 and focuses on the topics of nutrition, physical activity, social and emotional wellness, and other school-based activities with the ultimate goal to establish and review systems and provide students with the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to lead healthy lives. In addition to meeting 5 times during the 2018-19 school year as a full committee, members of this group will also be invited to participate on one of three sub-committees. The three sub-committees will focus on these topics:

  • physical activity
  • social and emotional well-being
  • nutrition

FAQs

Who is on the committee?

Our committee includes six parent volunteers representing each district school, 12 staff members and administrators representing different levels and disciplines, two student representatives, four community specialists, our school nurse, and our food service dietician.

How were committee members selected?

In July 2018, all district families received an email invitation to volunteer their time to be a member of a district-wide health and wellness committee. A total of 61 parents volunteered their time to serve on this advisory committee. Due to the high volume of volunteers, we developed a process to narrow our group into an effective working committee size. We followed a process of narrowing our parent volunteers by grouping parents according to self-identified student health or wellness concerns, and then randomly selecting from those groups, ensuring representation from all levels and schools. We used a random selection tool available on random.org to select our parent volunteers.

Will I be able to add my voice and my perspective on these topics?

YES! We certainly recognize that a group of six parents on this advisory committee can in no way represent the diverse opinions and experiences of our full district community. The committee will provide other opportunities for the full district community to share their perspectives and voice on wellness topics through additional opportunities such as surveys, and perhaps other opportunities to be determined as the committee progresses. Please watch for information on survey opportunities. We will include updates and information via multiple channels such as our website, email, and in our newsletters.

How can I learn more about what the committee is reviewing and planning?
