Mequon-Thiensville School District

Canvas LMS

What Is Canvas?

Canvas is the district Learning Management System (LMS) for MTSD. Canvas allows teachers to facilitate, document, and track learning in an online environment. Parents and guardians can use Canvas to see important class information including assignments, due dates, assignment feedback, teacher engagement, and more using their Canvas Observer Account. Daily lessons will be provided in a structured format using asynchronous (not happening in real-time, e.g. pre-recorded videos, texts) and/or synchronous (virtually, in real-time with teacher) methods. All assessments and grading practices and procedures will mirror on-campus practices and procedures.

How is Canvas different from Infinite Campus?

Canvas is a learning management system (LMS) that provides a more detailed look at your student’s learning and will have the most up-to-date grade information. Parents/guardians can use Canvas to see assignment details, view teacher feedback, and engage with teachers. Infinite Campus is a student information system (SIS) that serves as a database for student demographics (on the administrative side) and all student grades (on the student/parent side).

What does Canvas look like?

Here is a brief overview video that provides an example of a student's Canvas view:
200 - Canvas Overview for Students
In this video, you will learn about the student's Canvas Dashboard and Global Navigation links. You’ll also learn about how students navigate a course and access assignments. The look of the dashboard and navigation will vary by the student's grade level.

Parents will have the ability to act as observers in their child's courses. As an observer, parents will be able to link to their students in Canvas, and will have some access to the course material. Observers cannot submit work on behalf of the students they observe but are able to access some components of the course without being able to affect any course data or participation.
