U.S. News & World Report Ranking

Background Information

US News Best High Schools 2018

In April 2021, Mequon-Thiensville School District administration became aware that Homestead High School (HHS) state ranked at #142 in the most recent U.S. News & World Report Best High Schools electronic publication. Two of the five ranking factors for Homestead High School are listed as not applicable under the current rankings methodology. These two ranking factors are determined based on 12th-grade students’ participation and success on Advanced Placement examinations. U.S. News & World Report has shared that they are provided Advanced Placement data directly from the College Board. As with past rankings by U.S. News and World Report, the rankings are determined based on assessment results from two years prior. The 2021 U.S. News & World Report rankings are determined based on assessment data from the 2018-19 school year.

On April 27, 2021 the MTSD superintendent began reaching out to U.S. News and World Report regarding Homestead High School’s most recent ranking. Multiple emails and phone calls were made and it was shared by U.S. News and World Report that their data to inform ranking is uploaded from the College Board and that our concerns should be brought up with that organization. On April 28, a phone call was placed and a request for review was entered with the College Board. After continued follow-up by the MTSD superintendent, the case was reported to receive an “Extremely High Priority” rating on May 11.

The superintendent was put in contact with a College Board Lead Customer Care Specialist on May 13. After exchanging 11 emails, on June 11 the MTSD Superintendent of Schools was informed that Homestead High School (HHS) did not have an assigned National Center for Education Statistics ID at the time AP data was mapped to schools, a requirement for the proper association of data. That same day and in response to this information, the following question was posed, “Can you tell me who has the responsibility for assigning a National Center for Education Statistics ID?”

After exchanging seven emails, on June 30, the MTSD Superintendent of Schools received the following message: “Please contact the National Center for Education Statistics. They will be able to assist you with your question.”

The MTSD Superintendent contacted the National Center for Education Statistics that same day to inquire for additional information regarding the issue. As of July 1, no response had been received.

The College Board has confirmed that their records now show that Homestead High School was assigned an ID at some point after they delivered AP data to U.S. News and World Report. With this confirmation, they have noted that “any updates to school information after we deliver our files would not make it into the final rankings—in accordance with the policies set by U.S. News and World Report.”
