The substitute teacher's role in the educational process is very important. Providing continuity in the classroom during a teacher's absence is essential to a sound education. Do you have an interest in supporting and inspiring students? Consider substitute teaching in MTSD!
What qualifications are required in order to substitute teach?
Substitute teachers must have either a teaching license from the Wisconsin DPI or a bachelors degree from a college/university. (If bachelors degree, MTSD will provide endorsement for a substitute teaching license.)
Can a substitute teacher indicate specific preferences and availability?
Substitute teachers have choice and flexibility in the following:
- Preferred ages/grades
- Preferred building(s)
- Content area preferences such as math, art, world languages, etc.
- Days (or half days) and frequency of availability
How much are substitute teachers compensated?
Daily assignments are paid at $100/day or $50/half-day. After a substitute teacher works 15 days in MTSD, the rates increase to $115/day or $62.50/half-day.

If you love children and love being active, and if you are interested in making extra money while also making a difference, apply to become a Playworks recess mentor! Recess mentors foster fun, inclusive and safe playground environments for elementary school students from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. daily during the school year. We are also open to creative scheduling options, including job sharing. Paid training is provided. Mentors earn $10 per hour - a great opportunity for parents, grandparents, and college students.
