Voters in the Mequon-Thiensville School District (MTSD) approved a $26.4 million operational referendum by a margin of 52% yes to 48% no - the first approved operational referendum in the school district’s history -  to maintain and sustain the district’s operations. This decision reflects the community's commitment to investing in our high-quality public education system and supporting the needs of our students and staff members.

The approval of this referendum will enable MTSD to:

  • Balance the budget without depleting reserves, ensuring financial stability and the continuation of essential programs and services.
  • Develop a competitive compensation system for teachers and establish higher starting wages for support staff, aiding in the recruitment and retention of high-quality educators.
  • Manage rising healthcare costs, allowing the district to allocate resources effectively and maintain employee benefits.
  • Address delayed maintenance projects, ensuring that school facilities remain safe, functional, and conducive to learning.
  • Protect the district’s Aaa bond rating, preserving MTSD's strong financial standing and minimizing future borrowing costs.

For over a year leading up to the referendum vote, the MTSD Board of Education and administration have engaged the school district community in consideration of the district’s financial needs and projected budget shortfalls, along with the impacts of historic inflation and stagnant state funding. A Community Task Force, formed in October 2023, reviewed financial challenges, evaluated options, and provided recommendations for revenue-generating solutions. In May 2024, the Board conducted a community survey, gathering 1,117 responses, with 57% of respondents indicating support for a potential $30 million operational referendum over four years.

"We are deeply grateful for our community's engagement and support in approving this historic referendum," said Dr. Matthew Joynt, MTSD Superintendent of Schools. "This decision enables us to continue providing exceptional educational opportunities for our students, critical support and resources for our staff members, and to uphold the standards of excellence that define our district strengths and the vitality of our school community.”

With the referendum's approval, MTSD will immediately begin steps to finalize the 2024-25 budget, start planning for the 2025-26 school year budget, and allocate these funds responsibly to maximize positive impacts for students, staff, and families. All community members are encouraged to remain engaged in this process by attending upcoming school board meetings and following District updates to stay informed.
