Student Spotlight: AP Spanish Senior Uses Language Skills to Serve Community 🌎

This past summer, Homestead High School senior Kyle Miller put his classroom learning to work in a big way while volunteering with Remote Area Medical (RAM), an organization he has supported for the past three years across Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin. When he noticed a shortage of on-site Spanish interpreters, Kyle stepped up to bridge the communication gap for non-English-speaking patients. Drawing on his Spanish education, culminating in AP Spanish this fall, he translated for optometrists during eye exams, assisted in the triage unit, and facilitated standard medical consultations. The experience was both challenging and rewarding, inspiring Kyle to pursue a Spanish minor in college. 

We would like to recognize the dedicated instruction and encouraging classroom environment provided by our World Language department, which helped build Kyle's fluency and confidence in navigating complex conversations in a medical setting. 🙌
